Growing your own Medicinal Herb Garden

A one day workshop with Herbalist and Grower Ross Hennessy at his Medicinal Herb farm Bareroot Botanicals in  North Co. Sligo.

During the day Ross will teach you all you need to know about growing medicinal plants from seed to harvesting. The course will focus on particular herbs that are most useful to have at hand for making your own simple home remedies

Throughout the day we will cover:

 

  • Seed sowing: Different techniques for different seeds
  • Propagation: What your seedlings need to germinate and how to provide the correct environment
  • Division, cuttings & layering: Multiply your plants, what plants can be used with these methods
  • Transplanting: When, how, soil types and common mistakes that cause slow growth
  • Maintenance: Caring for your medicinal herbs, feeding & pest control
  • Harvesting & seed saving: How and when to know your plants are at their peak
  • Drying: From simple methods to large drying equipment

Medicinal properties of the herbs, their uses and remedies will be discussed as we work with the plants.

This is a hands on course where plants we work on are taken home at the end of the day.

Cost: €100 includes a large vegetarian lunch, herbal teas, treat and all materials supplied.

Bareroot Botanicals is a nursery and herb farm based in north county Sligo which specialises in medicinal plants from around the world. It is owned and ran by Iona Herbal Herbalists Ross Hennessy and Marina Kesso.

We hope that through our nursery and the courses we run on the farm that we will empower people to use and grow these plants and see an ancient form of natural healing passed onto another generation.
