On this morning workshop herbalist and grower Ross Hennesy will talk about the roots of medicinal plants, their uses, how and when to harvest and how to preserve and prepare.

From the common dandelion root to echinacea , you can be sure you have some medical plants growing in your garden that have great benefit to your health.  This workshop will give you the confidence to dig up and prepare your root crops, while also taking into consideration how to harvest sustainably. On our farm we commercially grow over 60 different medical crops 20 of these would be specifically grown for their root stock. During the workshop we will dig up some roots and show washing techniques.

On the workshop we will cover:

  • The uses of common Irish and rare foreign plants that are grown for their roots, ie nettle, valerian, angelica, rhodiola, goldenseal, dandeloin, echinacea, marshmallow
  • Their growing requirements
  • When and how to harvest roots
  • Washing and preparing roots
  • Drying and different extraction methods to preserve their medicinal properties.
  • Correct storage of dried roots
  • Tastings

What to bring: Outdoor wear as we will go outside to dig up and wash roots. Notes will be provided so just bring a pen..

A half day certificate course with Herbalist and Grower Ross Hennessy at his Medicinal Herb farm Bareroot Botanicals in  North Co. Sligo.

This course is aimed at the organic farmer or wildcrafter who wishes to grow/harvest medicinal crops ans sell them for processing into Herbal medicines for human use. We have to follow GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards in our processing facility and GACP with growing and harvesting, it insures full trace-ability back to the seed source for each medicinal product. Following GACP standards insures that only the highest quality plants are grown and harvested at their optimal times. The course content is compiled from years of crop trials that Ross has carried out and up to date European guidelines.

We will cover the following topics on the day:

A practical course run over two days on how to make a range of herbal remedies. Learn to make your own herbal creams, ointments, glycerites, syrups, compresses and more.

This course is very hands on where each  participant makes their own remedies from fresh and dried plant material from our herb garden.

You will learn:

A one day workshop with Herbalist and Grower Ross Hennessy at his Medicinal Herb farm Bareroot Botanicals in  North Co. Sligo.

During the day Ross will teach you all you need to know about growing medicinal plants from seed to harvesting. The course will focus on particular herbs that are most useful to have at hand for making your own simple home remedies

Throughout the day we will cover:

This talk teaches you natural healthcare for your child and how to make simple natural and herbal remedies for common ailments in babies and children.

This course takes you through common ailments for babies and toddlers and how you can effectively treat these with herbs, simple home remedies and nutrition. We will also discuss how to incorporate immune boosting foods and herbs into your child's diet for better health.

Conditions include: colic, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach upsets,teething, reflux, earache, coughs, chest infections, colds & flu, low immunity, eczema, cradle cap, nappy rash, cuts and wounds, burns. We will also discuss infectious diseases like chicken pox, how to recognise the signs and symptoms and simple home remedies that alleviate these. You will be introduced to different herbs for the ailments and safe use of essential oils.

 

Learn how to stay healthy this winter using simple home remedies and nutrition for adults and children. Using kitchen ingredients, foods, wild plants and herbs you will be shown how to make ointments, oxymels, gargles, vinegars and oils for specific conditions that flare this time of year. If you suffer from recurring respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, poor circulation, chilblains or arthritic conditions you will benefit from this course. Demonstrations, tastings and recipes and samples to take home.

  • Natural hair care - alternatives to chemical shampoos and conditioner

Bareroot Botanicals is a nursery and herb farm based in north county Sligo which specialises in medicinal plants from around the world. It is owned and ran by Iona Herbal Herbalists Ross Hennessy and Marina Kesso.
