Plant medicines have been used by people for centuries to heal the body, bring wellbeing and restore balance. Modern herbal medicine has evolved into a professional practice with many highly qualified herbalists providing safe and effective treatments for a huge range of conditions. Now a days science has well documented research papers which back up the uses of medicinal plants and their is a greater understanding of the interactions that pharmaceutical medication has with herbal medicine. Herbal medicine has seen a great revival over the past decade where people and communities are reeducating themselves in the use of native and wild harvested medicinal plants. This has allowed people to take responsibility for their own health and to give them safer and more cost effective treatments than what may have been previously offered.

Herbal medicine comes in many forms and there are many ways of extracting the phytochemicals from the plant. The most common method of preserving the medicinal properties is by using alcohol which is called a tincture. A tincture is made by adding alcohol at a specific strength and amount for the particular phytochemicals you want to extract. It sounds complicated but it is something you can easily do at home with some very basic equipment. Another is decocting or making a cup of tea form the dried or fresh herbs.   By picking the specific part of a plant at its optimal time for harvest you will receive the greatest benefit as the plant will have put all it healing energy in that part of the plant. Understanding and learning when is the best time to harvest your plants for medicinal use is explained on most of our courses that we run on the farm. Using plant as medicine is a very safe and effective way to treat many conditions. The best way to really understand the true power and potential of what nature offers is to study and spend time with these amazing plants. We are hoping that through our nursery and our courses that we will empower people to use and grow these plants in the hope of seeing this ancient form of natural healing passed onto another generation.

Bareroot Botanicals is a nursery and herb farm based in north county Sligo which specialises in medicinal plants from around the world. It is owned and ran by Iona Herbal Herbalists Ross Hennessy and Marina Kesso. They nursery was established three years ago to provide other herbalists around the country with plants and to inspire them to reconnect with growing your own plant medicines. The Nursery is a source garden for anyone looking for heirloom varieties of medicinal plants which are grown for their high phytochemical content. Medicinal plants have been with us since the beginning of time and by encouraging people to repopulate their gardens or public grounds with these plants, will keep the knowledge of herbal medicine alive in communities.

Workshops and courses are ran on the farm to teach people how to grow and safely use herbal medicines. The nursery hosts 140 different herbs and over 200 growing on the farm which Ross and Marina process on site. We process our herbs into dried stock for teas, tinctures, glycerites, vinegars, oils, creams, ointments and into dried stock for teas for use in their herbal medicine clinical practice.

How we deliver our plants to you.

We have found that plants can survive about 4 days with this method, but we prefer not to put them under that much stress so we do not send out orders on Thursday or Friday. We do not send out on these two days because of the unlikely event that you miss the courier the plants may be sitting in a hot storage depot over the weekend.
